Gaines Village Council votes to continue sending maintenance funds to library

GAINES, Michigan — The issue of the annual check for $1,025 for maintenance of the Gaines Station Library that caused arguments during the August Village Council meeting has been resolved — again.
The Village Council voted 5-1 to send the checks from Gaines Township to Gaines Station Incorporated, the group that runs the library, rather than the village.

FENTON, Michigan -- Megan Hansen of Fenton and Stephanie Morris of Swartz Creek seem like other 20-year-old women.
They enjoy spending time with friends, going to the movies and talking on the phone. Hansen is taking classes at Mott Community College.
Despite their on-the-surface normalcy, Hansen and Morris are awaiting lung transplants to continue battling a deadly illness they've each dealt with since birth -- cystic fibrosis.

The former Army colonel and pilot hired a local artist to paint the favorite of his nine planes on his fence, and he will have his second favorite painted next year.

Officers arrived and found a man sitting on the couch watching television with no signs of forced entry. The 43-year-old Lennon man said his girlfriend was at a bar and had proof that he lived in the residence.
He had a warrant for a traffic violation and contempt of court and was arrested and taken to Genesee County Jail.

Officer Jason Morse smelled alcohol on the driver, a 31-year-old Swartz Creek man, and the driver said he had been drinking.
He had a 0.17 blood-alcohol level and was arrested and lodged at Genesee County Jail. His car was impounded.

A duck officials have named Courtney because of her nesting in the courtyard has moved into the courtyard to lay her eggs for the past two summers.
"This is an unusual duck," said Lee Porter, assistant principal at the middle school.
This year, Courtney and her ducklings were taken to Tammi Zito's Clayton Township home with 10 acres and a pond.

SWARTZ CREEK, Michigan — The City Council discussed a proposed fine arts fair planned for August 2009 at Elms Park during its last meeting.
Organizer Richard Mattson said Art in the Park will feature vendors and fine artists during the one-day event. He is looking to get more community members on board and already has the support of the Swartz Creek Women's Club, Kiwanis Club and the Downtown Development Authority.
