If there's one statistic the Detroit Lions can improve that will have the biggest impact on their record this season, it's average rushing yards per attempt, says MLive's Lions Insider Tom Kowalski.
So will they improve in that category?

The Great Missing Bag Caper will not die.
But former Detroit Lions running back Tatum Bell is still hoping to get to the bottom of what happened a few days ago, when the team signed Rudi Johnson and cut Bell.
Johnson's bags disappeared from the Lions' facility, then reappeared sans much of their contents, which included cash, credit cards – even underwear, according to Johnson.

With so many inexperienced quarterbacks starting under center in the NFC North, it would appear as if the Lions' offense is far and away better than any other team in their division.
And, while Lions insider Tom Kowalski might agree with that assessment, he says a better offense doesn't necessarily equal a better record.

by The Grand Rapids Press
Wednesday September 03, 2008, 10:38 PM
Michigan State men's basketball coach Tom Izzo joined Bill Simonson on "The Huge Show" on Wednesday to talk about why he has the Spartans playing a difficult schedule in the 2008-09 season.
"You never have to worry about your kids getting cocky, because they usually get beat up a little bit. You never have to worry about because it's plain and simple," said Izzo of a schedule that includes Texas, Kansas and North Carolina.
"To be honest, I figured North Carolina might lose two or three of those players when I scheduled them. For some strange reason, (Tar Heels coach) Roy (Williams) wouldn't let them go."

There are definite question marks at the top of the Lions' 2008 draft class according to Lions insider Tom Kowalski. He tells Art Regner on WDFN-AM Detroit, "How can you not be disappointed [with the Lions' draft picks]?"
The top two picks -- Gosder Cherilus and Jordan Dizon -- are not expected to start on opening day against Atlanta and the he even feels that the team's confidence in Kevin Smith has to be called into question with the acquisition of running back Rudi Johnson.

Since it became apparent that the Cincinnati Bengals were looking to trade him, running back Rudi Johnson was just waiting for the next opportunity to appear. After signing his one-year deal, the 28-year-old is just looking to contribute as much as he can.
So why did Johnson get released?
"I don't know," he says on WDFN's The Stoney and Wojo Show. "It was just that time to move on. I think it was just a situation where my time had ran its course. And I kind of got the same feeling when the report came out last Monday that they were trying to trade me.
