"She was a prisoner in her own home," said Genesee County Sheriff Robert J. Pickell.
David S. Parry, 37, of Millington was jailed Dec. 27 on charges of second-degree vulnerable adult abuse after as five-month investigation into his role as his aunt's caretaker. He was released from the county jail Wednesday on a $25,000 personal recognizance bond.
Pickell said Parry's aunt -- the widow of a former bank executive -- paid him $3,000 a month to be her caretaker.
But after getting complaints about garbage piled up around her Flint Township home, Pickell said investigators with the Genesee County Elder Abuse and Exploitation Prevention program visited the house in August and were shocked by what they found -- including a bucket of urine and feces in the shower and empty beer bottles and trash piled throughout the home to the point where people could barely walk from room to room.

The kitchen in Shap's Restaurant in Mundy Township was closed by health inspectors who determined that the restaurant was "operating beyond its capability to assure the safety of the foods ... it serves."Note: The date and time stamp on this article have been changed from its original post on Wednesday, Jan. 7, 2009. MUNDY TOWNSHIP, Michigan -- The Genesee County Health Department has ordered a popular family restaurant to turn off the grill and stop cooking.
Shap's Restaurant, 2520 W. Hill Road, was ordered to limit its service to prepacked, nonpotentially hazardous food after health inspectors concluded the restaurant was "operating beyond its capability to assure the safety of the foods ... it serves."
The Flint Journal could not reach owners Nick and Anatasia Pirkovic for comment Wednesday. A handwritten sign on the door of the restaurant told customers the closing was related to a mechanical problem.
But Health Department officials said they took the unusual step of ordering the kitchen closed after a Dec. 30 inspection showed repeat, unresolved problems, including old food such as chicken salad, cabbage soup and beef brisket in coolers.
That food should have been thrown out because of how long it had been opened, according to a county report.
