    Local merchants to bid on best of Hudsonville student art

    Merchants can bring a little class, along with a child's world view, to their business through a new program from Hudsonville Public Schools.

    "Art Around Town" is an art leasing program that features professionally framed student art.
    Business owners can see 30 framed works from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 14, at Hudsonville City Hall, 3275 Central Blvd., and place bids in a silent auction on pieces they would like to display for a time in their stores. An artists reception will follow from 7 to 8 p.m. that evening, when bid awards will be announced.

    Grandville school buses pass with flying colors

    Students in Grandville haven't gotten their first report cards yet, but the district's buses have already received an "A+" on a recent inspection tour.

    Arlyn Cribley, Grandville Public Schools transportation director Arlyn Cribley, said that a mandatory inspection of all 46 Grandville buses at the end of July netted marks of 100 percent for all buses.

    Grandville homecoming

    New home for a home

    The former home of Bert and Eileen Talsma, which stood next to the home of Bert's parents, Richard and Gerta Talsma, has been moved to make room for the expansion of Talsma Furniture, at the corner of Chicago Drive and School Street. Bert and Richard were founders of the family furniture business, now operated by Tim and Richard Talsma. The older home of Richard and Gerta was demolished earlier this summer, and stones from the porch were saved for use in the new addition.

    Zeeland Township planners OK second methane gas station

    NEXT DOOR: Cancer walk

    From front left, Sherri Dickman, Karen Gunneman, Lisa Vander Kolk (back left), and Marcia Hopkins recently walked 60 miles in three days to raise more than $11,000 for the Susan G. Komen Cancer Foundation.
    A year of training and dedication for four area women recently culminated with a three-day walk totaling 60 miles to help in the fight against cancer.

    Karen Gunneman, Lisa Vander Kolk, and Sherri Dickman, all of Zeeland, and Marcia Hopkins, of Grand Rapids, trained for a year, walking almost every day and sometimes 18 and 15 miles over a weekend, to participate in the Susan G. Komen Cancer Foundation 3-Day Walk. Held in the Detroit area Sept. 26-28, the women joined about 3,300 participants walking 20 miles each day and camping in two-women pink tents at night.

    Successful hunt

    Family bragging rights

    Tranaya Palma, 14, of Jenison, accompanied by guardian James VerStrat, shot her first deer, a 10-point, in Vestaburg during the youth season. VerSrtat said Tranaya is an excellent student and athlete at Jenison Middle School, and plans to hunt again in November. "We are very proud of Tranaya, as she now hold the largest mount in the house," he said.

    Discovering what kinds of social service needs exist in Ottawa County is the goal of the Greater Ottawa County United Way Community Assessment. Last week, the report, compiled every five years, was presented to service providers and community leaders, many of whom were instrumental in the task of gathering and analyzing the data in the 85-page document.     LESS IS MOHR: Next supervisor to get less than current pay, more than 'part-time'

    The pay for Georgetown Township's next supervisor will be $81,250, plus full benefits, at least at the beginning of the term.

    The Township Board voted unanimously last week to set the salary at that amount, reversing an earlier move to drop the pay that presumptive supervisor-elect Dale Mohr would receive to $15,000 a year.

    Alcohol ordinance coming back Oct. 13

    Discussion last week of an ordinance that would regulate liquor licenses in Georgetown Township was not an official first reading of the ordinance. That will be on the Oct. 13 Township Board meeting agenda, and must be followed by a second reading before the board can vote on adoption of the ordinance.

    Vacant restaurant in Standale gets license

    A long-vacant building in Standale is on its way to reopening.

    The building, which housed the Highlander Restaurant and Blarney Stone Lounge, 4072 Lake Michigan Drive, has been vacant for at least three years, according to real-estate listing information.

    Zeeland's Pumpkinfest shines for 25th time

    A celebration of pumpkins and the community comes to downtown Zeeland on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday for the 25th anniversary of Pumpkinfest.
    The city of Zeeland will shine this weekend as the community comes together to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Pumpkinfest.

    The fall festival commemorates its milestone with the theme "It's Time to Shine" and features longtime favorite activities. The event will be held Thursday, Friday, and Saturday in downtown Zeeland.
