Dixie Deva teaches seniors how to beat the food inflation blues with cost-saving cooking tips

by Nikki Brand | The Flushing Observer
    Sunday October 05, 2008, 8:30 PM

FLUSHING, Michigan — Joyce Bellaire said she knew it was bad when the cashier apologized for some sharp price increases during a recent trip to the store.

Bellaire, 70, of Flushing Township said increases at the grocery store caused her to consider cutting back on the food she buys and on what she refers to as "the non-essentials" like chocolate and potato chips.

"I noticed eggs have gone up so much the last year that I might start getting half a dozen instead of a dozen," Bellaire said.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture reported that the price of eggs increased 6.9 percent between August 2007 and August 2008.

"Divine Dixie Deva" Kathryn McAllister prepares a dish and talks about the preparation at the Flushing Area Senior Center.

Flushing gears up for week of homecoming fun

by Nikki Brand | The Flushing Observer

Flushing High School's Homecoming football game is Friday. The senior student court and underclassmen attendants are (back, from left): Seniors Ethan Degalan, Johnny Hinsberg, Joey Scherba, and Emily Williams; juniors Nolan Ward and Alyssa Hearin; and sophomore Tom Smith. Front, from left are: Seniors Hannah Meiklejohn, Emily Weber, Heather Pratt, and Chris Dao; freshman Nick Racette; senior R.V. Mendoza; freshman Alexis Bois; and sophomore Mehgan Ott. Sophomore Danielle Deloney is not pictured.
FLUSHING, Michigan — Students are hoping the football team wins the homecoming game Friday against Midland Dow by such a margin that the Chemics will go home crying to their "mummies."

It's all part of the high school's Egyptian theme this year.

"I think the Egyptian theme is real versatile with the floats and the dance," said Student Council President Tamer Abuaita, 16.

Events start at 7 p.m. Monday, when the senior and junior girls will face off for the Powder Puff football game. Some of the junior and senior boys will stand in as cheerleaders.

From left, Adrianne Bright and Ali Huber, both 14, make a knight with a garbage bag and duct tape for the freshman float that will be in the homecoming parade Friday.

Gensee County senior centers feel the pinch of the increase in senior population

by Ashley A. Smith | The Flint Journal
    Sunday October 05, 2008, 4:45 AM

Harold Eichorn of Swartz Creek calls a trump during a game of euchre at the Swartz Creek Senior Center.

SWARTZ CREEK, Michigan — While the projected burst in the senior citizen population is not expected for a few more years, there are already signs that the senior population is growing.

"In my neighborhood there are a lot of seniors, probably more than there are people with school-age children," said Angel Roberts, 39, of Swartz Creek.

Roberts, who lives in the Lindenwood Farms subdivision of Swartz Creek, said she feels the neighborhood is more peaceful and quiet as it has gotten older.

According to the U.S. Census, from 2000 to 2006 in Genesee County the population of people 60 and older increased from 15.4 percent to 17 percent.

The Swartz Creek Senior Center has been feeling the brunt of an increase in new members this year more than in the past.

Elms Elementary School completes environmental trail for students and public to use

by Nikki Brand | The Flushing Observer
    Saturday October 04, 2008, 1:00 PM

FLUSHING TOWNHIP, Michigan — What started out as a place for students to learn about nature has turned into a "beautiful and refreshing oasis" the entire community can enjoy.

After nine years of work on athe 220-yard trail, the ribbon was cut at a ceremony Sept. 25 for the Elms Environmental Kingdom Sept. 25 next to Elms Elementary School, 6125 N. Elms Road.

Teachers Mary Putnam and Debbie Pierce, now retired, started work on the trail in 1999.

"I would bring my music classes out here when I was still teaching and show them the plants and the snakes and the frogs, and we would sing out here," said Pierce, who retired in 2006.

Cody Caverly examines some berries in the Elms Environmental Kingdom, piquing the interest of fellow fourth-grade classmate Jessica Taylor.

John McCain's brother, Joe, campaigns on behalf of the Republican presidential candidate Friday in Linden. Joe McCain shows off his brother's bomber jacket to veteran Gary Mahnke, member of the VFW 4642 Post in LInden.

LINDEN, Michigan -- Joking that he's a "discount John McCain," the Republican presidential nominee's younger brother fired up veterans at a campaign rally Friday afternoon, the day after McCain announced he is pulling out of Michigan.

In an intimate town hall setting at the local VFW hall, Joe McCain told a few dozen spectators that his heroic older brother is the man America needs in the White House in the challenging years ahead.

"When the proverbial phone rings at 3 o'clock in the morning, you want John McCain to answer," he said. "He can make the tough decisions."
