Flushing teen loses father, friend in same week
by Nikki Brand | The Flushing Observer Friday October 03, 2008, 5:04 PM
FLUSHING, Michigan — "They are probably up there in heaven laughing at us," said Anthony Senchak, 17, of his father and a good friend who died in separate incidents last month.
Anthony is cherishing memories of his father, David, who died of a heart attack at age 46 on Sept. 27, and his good friend Alexa Woodfield, who died in a car accident Sept. 24.
Anthony said Alexa, 17, was one of his good friends and was on the Powers Catholic High School Homecoming Court with him.
Anthony, now a junior at Powers, met Alexa in seventh grade at a dance.
"She was probably the nicest person I'd ever met. She got me to meet other people. She was outgoing, not afraid to introduce herself to anyone," Anthony said.
His father died the day students and families celebrated a Mass for Alexa. David Senchak was fishing at his new house on Lake Fenton when he had a heart attack and fell into the water.

FLUSHING, Michigan — Joyce Bellaire said she knew it was bad when the cashier apologized for some sharp price increases during a recent trip to the store.
Bellaire, 70, of Flushing Township said increases at the grocery store caused her to consider cutting back on the food she buys and on what she refers to as "the non-essentials" like chocolate and potato chips.
"I noticed eggs have gone up so much the last year that I might start getting half a dozen instead of a dozen," Bellaire said.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture reported that the price of eggs increased 6.9 percent between August 2007 and August 2008.

Harold Eichorn of Swartz Creek calls a trump during a game of euchre at the Swartz Creek Senior Center.SWARTZ CREEK, Michigan — While the projected burst in the senior citizen population is not expected for a few more years, there are already signs that the senior population is growing.
"In my neighborhood there are a lot of seniors, probably more than there are people with school-age children," said Angel Roberts, 39, of Swartz Creek.
Roberts, who lives in the Lindenwood Farms subdivision of Swartz Creek, said she feels the neighborhood is more peaceful and quiet as it has gotten older.
According to the U.S. Census, from 2000 to 2006 in Genesee County the population of people 60 and older increased from 15.4 percent to 17 percent.
The Swartz Creek Senior Center has been feeling the brunt of an increase in new members this year more than in the past.

Elms Elementary School completes environmental trail for students and public to use
by Nikki Brand | The Flushing Observer Saturday October 04, 2008, 1:00 PM
FLUSHING TOWNHIP, Michigan — What started out as a place for students to learn about nature has turned into a "beautiful and refreshing oasis" the entire community can enjoy.
After nine years of work on athe 220-yard trail, the ribbon was cut at a ceremony Sept. 25 for the Elms Environmental Kingdom Sept. 25 next to Elms Elementary School, 6125 N. Elms Road.
Teachers Mary Putnam and Debbie Pierce, now retired, started work on the trail in 1999.
"I would bring my music classes out here when I was still teaching and show them the plants and the snakes and the frogs, and we would sing out here," said Pierce, who retired in 2006.

In an intimate town hall setting at the local VFW hall, Joe McCain told a few dozen spectators that his heroic older brother is the man America needs in the White House in the challenging years ahead.
