Big changes in store for Flint Generals ownership group; team will return for 2009-10 season despite heavy financial losses
by
Brendan Savage | The Flint Journal Monday January 05, 2009, 11:05 PM
FLINT, Michigan — The owners of the Flint Generals realize they've made some mistakes since purchasing the team 19 months ago and they're going to make changes this week in an attempt to straighten things out, according to co-owner Bob Dodge.

Dodge said changes in the nine-man ownership group will be announced at a press conference this week and that the Generals will field a team again next season despite heavy financial losses.
He also said the Generals owners hope to purchase Perani Arena soon in an effort to better promote and market the hockey team.
"We shook some things up today," Dodge said Monday night. "There are going to be some changes made in the group. There is a lot of discussion going on. Everything is positive. We're regrouping. We may take on some new investors. We have some people interested.
"I can tell you this: Everything is going to be better. We will be back next year. It's looking very, very good that we will own the arena very soon. We want it to work. We can't continue to pump money into it and keep doing it wrong.
"It's our fault for not having a permanent manager. The bottom line is it's our fault. We haven't managed it properly and when you're losing as much money as we're losing, things have to change."

by
Jared Field | The Flint Journal Monday January 05, 2009, 10:47 PM
Davon Smith, a highly-touted 5-10 point guard out of Chicago, was dismissed from the Mott Community College basketball team last week.
Mott head coach made it official after Monday night's blowout victory over Schoolcraft College.
"We had high expectations for Davon, but we had to leave him in Chicago," said Schmidt, who made the decision after the Bears' Dec. 29 game on the road at South Suburban College when Smith refused to join the team on the bus. "Guys earn playing time. We are starting a kid right now who came here as a walk-on. If guys take a step back and analyze what has been going on here for a while, they will realize that if you work hard and pay your dues, you will get your opportunity."
Smith averaged just more than three points per game in 11 games with the Bears.

Jordan LaDuke scored a game-high 16 points, including 10-of-12 shooting from the free-throw line, to lead Flushing, which received honorable mention, to a 43-29 victory Monday night at Dow.

Brendan SavageMore than 26 years of covering everything from badminton and BMX racing to major golf championships and the NBA Finals will do that to a guy.
That said, I'm genuinely looking forward to Saturday's 5:30 p.m. exhibition between the Detroit Red Wings alumni team and players who wore one of Flint's pro hockey uniforms during the past 40 years.
While many folks will visit Perani Arena to see the ex-Wings, it's the former Flint players I'm looking forward to seeing.
