Former Head Start director remembered as "one of the finest"

GENESEE COUNTY, Michigan -- For about 30 years, Harold "Mac" McKeever served Genesee County's low-income families and children.
"Mac lived Head Start," said Steve Walker, director of Genesee County Community Action Resource Development. "He was seen as one of the finest Head Start directors in the country."

FLINT, Michigan -- A longtime leader in the Michgian National Guard, Daniel G. Colwell was so well respected that a training area at Camp Grayling is named in his honor.
Colwell, 77, of Flint died of cancer Wednesday at McLaren Regional Medical Center, but he will be remembered for his dedication.
"Everything he did, he did with his whole heart. Never half way," said daughter Marcia Warner.
Colwell graduated from Flint Technical High School in 1949 and from GMI, now Kettering University, in 1954. He went on to receive his master's degree in industrial engineering from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor in 1967.
Dorothy Jozefiak remembered for putting others first

SWARTZ CREEK, Michigan -- Throughout her lifetime Dorothy A. Jozefiak put her family ahead of herself.
Jozefiak was always there when family needed her, whether it was dropping out of high school to care for her sick mother or providing snacks for her granddaughter's soccer practices.
Jozefiak, 75, of Swartz Creek died of cancer Tuesday at Genesys Hospice Care Center.
And, in her last few months, it was the family's turn to give back to the one person who was always there for them, said daughter Mary Ann Livesay of Lake Fenton.

"It was hugs and kisses for everybody. It didn't matter if she knew you or not," her father Gregory Frechette said. "Even when she was sick she was worried about everyone else."
MacKenzie, 15, died Friday, Aug. 15, 2008, from organ failure, caused by Tay-Sachs disease, a rare fatal disorder that causes progressive destruction of nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord.

Retired Fenton firefighter Tom J. Moorman was a 'family man all the way'

MoormanFENTON, Michigan -- As a volunteer firefighter, father and grandfather, Tom J. Moorman was always willing to help others.
Son-in-law Dan Ewing said Moorman was friendly and would go out of his way to help those around him.
"He just enjoyed helping people," Ewing said.

MuirLAPEER, Michigan -- For years, Paul Muir ran the Muir Brothers Funeral Home in Lapeer with his son Larry, but his wife Jane worked diligently alongside her husband in a supportive role.
"She didn't embalm bodies but she greeted families at the door and answered the phones," said her daughter, Debbie Brown of St. Petersburg, Fla., a former Lapeer resident.
Funeral services for Jane Muir, 91, who died Wednesday, will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Muir Brothers Funeral Home in Lapeer.

The longtime Mothers Against Drunk Driving member had every reason to be active in the organization.
In 1973, Vincent was driving home from work when a drunken driver slammed into her car. She suffered broken bones and a traumatic brain injury that left her in a coma for seven weeks.

FLINT, Michigan -- Daniel A. Thompson was an outgoing guy and helped friends and family when they needed it.
"He gave everybody the benefit of the doubt," said his mother, Jerrie Thompson.
"He was a family man."
It was that quality that ended his life.
Thompson, 20, of Flint died Wednesday at Hurley Medical Center after he was robbed and shot while giving an associate a ride.

GAINES, Michigan -- Twice a year, Roney D. Goode and his family would travel to Arkansas to his cabin on the lake, where the majority of his time was spent fishing.
But family members didn't mind, because all that time on the lake prompted Goode's annual fish fry, which would take place the Sunday after Father's Day.
Now the cabin, lake and family get-together will be missing one important catch -- Goode.
Goode, 64, of Gaines, died of cancer Monday at his residence.

NORTH BRANCH, Michigan -- The co-owner of Ross Automotive died Friday from injuries he suffered when the motorcycle he was driving the night before hit a 1985 Chevrolet pickup in McArthur, Ohio, south of Columbus.
John Buckner, 50, and his wife, Loretta Buckner, 48, both of North Branch, were flown to Grand Medical Center by Medflight on Thursday night. John Buckner died at the hospital, and Loretta Buckner is in stable condition.

And that passion made an impact on the Flint Institute of Arts, where she served on the board of trustees.

Her only son and his wife were expecting their first child, a son, in October.
The warm-spirited, family-loving Elliott couldn't wait to be a grandmother.
But Elliott, 48, of Flint died Sunday at Hurley Medical Center after she was struck by two vehicles earlier that night.

FLUSHING, Michigan -- Some Sundays Ezio "Benny" Binelli would skip church and go to his "church on Pasadena."
It wasn't really a church he was going to -- it was his shop he founded, Michigan Saw and Tool.
Benny Binelli, 79, of Flushing died of cancer July 15 at Hurley Medical Center.
"He just loved tools," said daughter Jacqueline Binelli.
"Every time he went to meet somebody about a tool issue, he made it into an event."
