Local officials hope Tinseltown dollars will add sparkle to Flint area economy

by Carol Azizian and Shena Abercrombie | The Flint Journal
    Tuesday January 06, 2009, 8:40 AM

The production crew of "All's Faire in Love" films a scene in September at Atwood Stadium in Flint. The crew also filmed at the Mott Foundation building and in Holly.

Note: This is an updated version of an earlier post on this article.

Flint Journal extras: See below for more articles on this movies in Michigan topic.

GENESEE COUNTY, Michigan -- Could Flint be in for part of a $80-million slice of the Hollywood pie coming to Michigan?

Local officials are definitely star-struck by the movies and the economic development they bring. Now, they're dazzled by the prospect of a multi-million dollar development deal that could bring several film and production facilities to Michigan.

State leaders are expected to make an official announcement as early as February or March, said Anthony Wenson, chief operating officer of the Michigan Film Office.

"We're optimistic several studios could be built in 2009," Wenson said. But he would not indicate how many or where they would be constructed.

The betting is the studios will be built in the Detroit area, but that doesn't mean we can't have big Hollywood dreams.

"It would be great for Genesee County to have a studio here. Somewhere in the county we should have a space that has sufficient indoor and outdoor space," said Jerry Preston, president of the Flint Area Convention and Visitors Bureau.

Palace Gardens in Burton has been vacant since a fire in 2005 and has been an eyesore to the community with tattered awnings and a hole in the front where someone crashed their vehicle into the building. On Monday (Jan. 5, 2009), the Burton City Council will decide if the old dance club will face the wrecking ball.

Flint Journal extras: See below for previous articles about the Palace Gardens.

BURTON, Michigan -- For the past three years, Elmeretta Fischer said she's been in a battle with her insurance company over a settlement for a fire that damaged her bar and nightclub.

She said she planned to use the money to remodel the building.

But for years the site has sat vacant and some neighbors called it an eyesore, while city officials grew impatient.
