HOLLY, Michigan -- Friday, Aug. 29 marks the 100th anniversary of Carry Nation's historic visit to the village of Holly. Until 1975, however, stories detailing her visit were just that -- stories passed along from resident to resident with no proof to support any of it.
The winter of 1973 found longtime resident and Holly High School history teacher Ardath Regan sitting in the Battle Alley Arcade alongside her friend, Ellen Hilty. The two were discussing ways they could bring "a little excitement" to the village of Holly.
"We were trying to figure out what we could do to cause some excitement in the community for the community," Regan said. "I had heard this story about Carry Nation being in Holly, and as a history teacher, it seemed to me pretty odd that Carry Nation and the governor of Michigan were supposed to be in town on the same day."

Flint Journal extras: See below for a district-by-district comparison of the graduation rates.
GENESEE COUNTY, Michigan -- About one in every six high-schoolers in Genesee County did not graduate in four years, according to 2007 data released Monday by the state of Michigan.
It's a significant drop from previous graduation rates, partly because state officials are using a new formula -- which they say gives a more accurate account of how many students graduate on time.
Some school officials say isn't a fair assessment. They believe their districts are being punished for helping students who need it the most: those in alternative education programs.
