    PREVIEW: Hal Ketchum

by Kevin Ransom | Ann Arbor News Special Writer
    Thursday July 24, 2008, 9:39 AM

Country radio's loss is the folk circuit's gain.

    Take Hal Ketchum, for example.

Over the last decade or more, as country radio has revealed itself for what it is - a clearing-house for the glossy country-pop flavor-of-the-month, with no regard for authentic country music - a steady stream of former million-selling, red-hot country-radio hitmakers like Ketchum have, in post-middle-age, been unceremoniously dumped from playlists. Just so they could make room for "more current" artists.

Finding latest hot game for Nintendo Wii will leave you fit to be tied

by Brenda Brissette Mata | The Flint Journal
    Thursday July 24, 2008, 8:15 AM

GENESEE COUNTY, Michigan -- If you were planning to buy the Wii Fit to get in a little exercise, it just might be the hunt for the game that gets you moving.

Since the May release, Nintendo's latest hot game for the Wii system sells out as fast as it rolls into stores.

Dave Murphy, general manager for Best Buy in Flint Township, said the store has had "three or four shipments since the game came out."

And every shipment has sold out quickly.

3 Doors Down still rockin' out

by Christina Fuoco-Karasinski | Contributing writer
    Thursday July 24, 2008, 12:25 AM

GENESEE COUNTY, Michigan -- 3 Doors Down's Brad Arnold never felt more insecure than the day he and his band played on the USS George Washington off the coast of Portugal.

"It was in port, but it was still out a ways," the singer told The Flint Journal. "We had to take a boat out to it. At the time, I was 22 years old. I was like, 'Man, they're all going to look at me like I'm a kid.' I got on the boat, and I was older than 90 percent of the people on the boat. The captain said the average age on that ship was 19. By the time they came home, it was 20."

Members of 3 Doors Down -- who also include guitarists Matt Roberts and Chris Henderson, bassist Todd Harrell and drummer Greg Upchurch -- have been avid supporters of the troops overseas. The group has played numerous concerts for the soldiers and, in 2007, wrote the song "Citizen Soldier" for a major promotional campaign for the National Guard. The "Citizen Soldier" video, directed by Antoine Fuqua, played before the previews at many movie theaters nationwide in the past year.

Twelve years later, O.A.R. hitting its stride; Jam Band to perform Friday at Meadow Brook Music Festival in Rochester Hills

by Timothy Flynn | The Flint Journal
    Wednesday July 23, 2008, 12:28 PM

O.A.R. will play Meadow Brook Music Festival on Friday.

ROCHESTER HILLS, Michigan -- It's easy to believe saxophonist and guitarist Jerry DePizzo when he says it's a good time to be a member of jam band O.A.R.

The group's new compact disc, "All Sides," was unleashed last week, and the band will headline Friday at the Meadow Brook Music Festival.

'American Idol' stars ready for Thursday performance in Detroit

by Christina Fuoco-Karasinski | Contributing writer
    Wednesday July 23, 2008, 10:40 AM

David Cook, center, is congratulated after being named the new American Idol during the season finale of American Idol on Wednesday May 21, 2008, in Los Angeles.

DETROIT, Michigan -- The "American Idol" winner should be a champ for the people, and David Cook is exactly that. The afternoon before his tour's July 1 opening night in Glendale, Ariz., Cook walked through the media area acknowledging each reporter. Later that evening, fans sitting side-stage got a special treat when Cook stood in the wings watching fellow contestant Brooke White, encouraging ticket holders to cheer her on.

"The goal is just to try to create some energy," Cook said in an interview with The Flint Journal before the Arizona show. "I think watching everybody else's set (in rehearsal), I've definitely got my work cut out for me. Everybody's bringing it. It's cool. If I can keep up with everybody else, I'll be just fine."

Reuters reveals inmates' top jams inside the joint

    by Bill Chapin
    Wednesday July 23, 2008, 7:18 AM

Given the opportunity, I'm sure the RIAA would lock everyone up inside a place where no one has Internet access. Until then, they'll just have to settle for the 2.3 million Americans already incarcerated.

The (now closed) Southern Michigan Correctional Facility doesn't really have anything to do with this story other than, you know, being a prison.
According to this profile from Reuters/Billboard, one entrepreneur has recognized that prisons are about the only place where you can still get people to pay for music. Not only that, but his audience keeps getting bigger every year. Hooray! [via Idolator]

Bob Paris is owner of Pack Central, a California mail-order company that sends out catalogues twice a year to 50,000 prisoners. The operation carries 10,000 titles on CD and 5,000 on cassette. Paris explains that cassettes account for more than half his business, though, because CDs are contraband at many prisons as they can be broken and used to shank a fool. For similar reasons, he has to remove all screws from the cassette tapes by hand.

So what are you likely to hear if you drive along Cooper Street and Parnall Road in Blackman Township by the remaining state correctional facilities (assuming you have super hearing and can pick up a small cassette deck behind the walls)? The not-terribly-surprising albums identified by Paris as top-sellers are listed after the jump:

Head to East Lansing for a 'Wicked' night at the theater

    by Tim Agne | MLive.com

Carmen Cusack plays Elphaba, The Wicked Witch of the West, in the touring production of "Wicked."

Before I moved to Michigan, I remember seeing an ad at the Detroit Metro baggage claim inviting travelers to check out the Broadway musical "Wicked." In Chicago.

While that may have laid the foundation for a fun weekend in the Windy City, Michiganders can have just as good a time planning an evening in East Lansing, where "Wicked" is showing through Aug. 10 at Michigan State University's Wharton Center for Performing Arts.

For Broadway neophytes — and I'm a bit of a newbie here myself — "Wicked" follows the witches from "The Wizard of Oz." Based on Gregory Maguire's revisionist novel, the musical turns Dorothy and the Yellow Brick Road into a tiny subplot in the much larger story of Elphaba, who comes to be known as The Wicked Witch of the West.
