The U.S.S Grunion in 1942.In the more than 66 years since the USS Grunion, a World War II Gato-class submarine, was lost somewhere between Pearl Harbor and the Alaskan Aleutian Islands, hope of finding them alive had vanished. But the mystery was surreal, and palpable the pain of not knowing why their boys never came home.
Many of David Nathaniel Swartwood's family died without knowledge of what caused the demise of the Grunion, or where his life, and the lives of his 69 comrades, were finally lost.

CLIO, Michigan -- An unlikely pairing could bring a medical training lab that would expand Mott Community College's footprint in northern Genesee County and help funnel more students into health care programs.
MCC's Northern Tier campus and Vienna Township business leaders are in talks about the project, which grew out of a local effort to improve the community's health.

She knows what she wants to do, where she wants to do it and how she's going to get there.
And she's just as sure about what she wants to be as what she doesn't.
"I could never be a surgeon," joked Hannah, who spent 10 days at the National Youth Leadership Forum on Medicine in Chicago this summer. "Cutting into people doesn't really fascinate me, but caring for people is what I really like to do."
A soldier defined: New monument graces Clio, Michigan, Veteran's Memorial Park

On Nov. 7, workers were busy installing the park's newest monument: an ornate tribute to the definitive military veteran.
"A veteran," the monument reads, "whether active duty, retired, nat-ional guard or reserve, is someone who at one point in his or her life wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America' for an amount of 'up to and including my life.'"
"That's exactly what it's all about," said Art Bigelow, a member of the Clio Veteran's Memorial Park Board, of the quote. "I knew I was going into the service, there was just no question about it."

Senior bowler Ellen Moran aims for century mark
by George Jaksa | The Community Newspapers contributing writer

Ellen Moran isn't the only bowler in the 90-year-old age range in the Senior Bowling League at Colonial Lanes. From left are Bill Brandon, 92, of Mt. Morris Township; Marion Guerrieri, 90, of Genesee Township; Moran, 97, of Flushing Township; and Ben Gauthier, 91, of Thetford Township. Sometimes Ellen Moran's ball slips into the gutter but more often than not it finds its mark at Colonial Lanes, 6430 W. Pierson Road, in the mixed doubles' senior league.
If she knocks down all of the pins, the house breaks out in cheers and applause and Ellen Moran flashes a sheepish grin.
