    Be straight about sitting up

by Ingrid Jacques | Be Healthy Jackson
    Monday October 20, 2008, 11:26 AM

Trying to find a model for perfect posture is not easy. Slouching at the computer during a long day is bound to happen, and we're all guilty of failing to sit up straight at a desk or table. In the long term, poor posture can have negative health consequences.

Poor posture can affect people in many professions, says Dr. Kevin Homer of Jackson Family Chiropractic, 2319 W. Main St. From computer operators to dental hygienists to factory workers, anyone who has to bend over throughout the day is at risk of poor posture.

    by Be Healthy Jackson
    Monday October 20, 2008, 11:09 AM

It may seem like you've always been in a state of testing: spelling tests, driving tests, school tests. But how are you doing on your health tests? Are you keeping up with your check-ups, or are you lagging behind? The list of tests and medical check-ups recommended for women only seems to grow as time passes, and it's easy to let some tests slip through the cracks.

Product: The Power of Power Bottles

by Jessica Sipperley | Be Healthy Jackson
    Monday October 20, 2008, 11:04 AM

Bottled water is wildly popular because of the filtered quality and convenience of being able to grab one and go. But after the water is gone, the plastic container is often tossed, adding to the mass amount of water bottles thrown away every year.

Power Bottle U.S.A. came around just in time, combining a sense of eco-consciousness with the quality of bottled water. Their newest line of water bottles, with carbon-activated filters, now brings in about 85 percent of the Madison Heights-based company's sales, says Joe Star, the national sales manager.

Prostate: Get the facts on this key gland

by Vicky L. Lorencen | Be Healthy Jackson

What exactly is the prostate? And where is located? If you're not sure, you're not alone. The healthy functioning of this gland is important, but many people only know the prostate is "somewhere down there." Let's start out with some basics on this male body part.

The prostate is a walnut-sized gland that's part of the male sex organs. Its job is to produce some of the fluid that protects and nourishes sperm cells in semen. Located below the bladder and in front of the rectum, the prostate surrounds the urethra, the tube that moves urine from the bladder or carries semen to the penis.

    Working more, snoozing less?

    by Jeff Bleiler
    Thursday August 07, 2008, 9:42 AM

All work and no play leaves you ... very, very sleepy. The 2008 Sleep in America Poll, conducted by the National Sleep Foundation, sampled 1,000 people through telephone interviews, and noted their sleep and work habits. All participants had to be at least 18 years old and work at least 30 hours per week for pay.

    Love the skin you're in

by Vicky L. Lorencen | For the Citizen Patriot

Like a lot of teens, I suffered with acne in high school. Back in the 1970s, dermatologists actually recommended sun exposure as a way to help the condition.

    Care for a mint? Please?

by Vicky L. Lorencen | Jackson Citizen Patriot

Halitosis, better known as bad breath, can be more than just an offensive odor after eating onions. It's embarrassing and can put a wrench in many social situations.

The first line of defense is tip-top dental hygiene, which includes brushing teeth (and tongue) twice a day and flossing daily. This helps because when bits of food stay in your mouth they promote bacteria growth between teeth, around gums and on the tongue. Bad breath is the result. Dry mouth, a medical condition, is another culprit. That's because saliva acts as a mouth cleanser. When saliva is decreased, bacteria builds and bad breath follows. Simply being dehydrated can have a similar side effect.

That's yet another reason to drink your eight glasses of water a day.
