Designers sought to replace sculpture's sails

    by Jan Holst
    Tuesday January 06, 2009, 11:29 AM

The large sculpture of a ship cutting through The Regatta Plaza in East Grand Rapids lost its wings due to damage from a wind storm late last year.
This time sails and wind were not meant to go together.

A 40-foot sculpture, with a two-fold purpose of shielding the view of a parking structure in Gaslight Village and paying tribute to East Grand Rapids' nautical history, lost its wings to high winds late last month.

While the fiberglass panels have sustained wind damage before, this time there was enough structural damage that the owners of the sculpture, Jade Pig Ventures, have decided to replace them.

Kim Hughes, longtime State Farm agent in Gaslight Village, has accepted a promotion to an agency field consultant for her company and is transferring to Chicago. The move fulfills a life-long dream of living in the Windy City for the couple, but leaving EGR behind is difficult personally and sure to leave voids in many organizations for which they have volunteered.
