Truck driver's dozing led to eggy mess in Ypsilanti
by
From Ann Arbor News staff and wire reports Thursday January 01, 2009, 3:12 PM
The driver of the semi truck that dumped its load on eastbound I-94 near Huron Street in Ypsilanti Wednesday apparently fell asleep at the wheel.
State troopers and road crews had to scramble when a tractor-trailer crashed and spilled its load of eggs on the interstate Wednesday night.
State Trooper Jim Smiley said the road reopened about 1 a.m. Thursday after being shut down for six hours.
Smiley says the truck driver fell asleep before his rig drifted onto the shoulder, then hit a guardrail and a bridge support beam that tore the trailer open and spilled hundreds of cartons of eggs along a 300-foot stretch of I-94.
Single-digit temperatures made for a frozen mess that Smiley says was scraped up by front-end loaders and put in dump trucks. Road workers then spread a mixture of sand and salt on all three lanes.
Authorities told The News Wednesday that the spilled cargo included produce, eggs and other items bound for grocery stores.
Smiley said the driver will be ticketed. The driver's name wasn't yet available.

Area roadways suddenly turned hazardous in the Ann Arbor area shortly before 8 a.m. this morning when a freezing rain swept through, immediately coating and obscuring windshields and turning roads to ice, drivers reported.
The sleet caused four crashes on area freeways, according to the Washtenaw County Sheriff's Department dispatchers.
As of about 8:30 a.m., six cars were involved in a crash on westbound I-94 at State Street. The right lane of the westbound side of the freeway is closed.
Two vehicles were involved in a crash on westbound I-94 east of Michigan Avenue but are not blocking any lanes.
There also are crashes on northbound US-23 at Carpenter Road and at Michigan Avenue but no lanes are blocked.
In downtown Ann Arbor, cars were having difficulty making it up the hill on Huron Street near First Street because of the slick conditions.
Police officials in Livingston County reported vehicles were sliding off of freeways throughout the county this morning, but no serious injuries or tie-ups were reported.
