Scio Township woman fights off armed intruder

A Scio Township woman fought off an armed intruder in the doorway of her home Monday evening, police said.
The 31-year-old woman was alone in the 200 block of Willow Tree Lane in Scio Farm Estates when she answered a knock at her door around 7:20 p.m., Washtenaw County Sheriff's Cmdr. Deiter Heren said.

Ypsilanti Township fire investigators will be talking today to the owner of a rental house that was damaged in a fire early today because the tenant was using an oven to heat the house.
Capt. David Webb said the house at 1400 Andrea Street had not had a working furnace since July, and had no smoke detectors.

Famed rock-and-roll guitarist and longtime Ann Arbor resident Ronald "Ron" Asheton was found dead in his home on the city's west side this morning, police said.
Asheton, 60, was an original member of The Stooges, a garage-rock band headlined by Iggy Pop and formed in Ann Arbor in 1967.
Trial underway in Pittsfield Township restaurant robbery

The trial for an Ypsilanti man charged with robbing a Pittsfield Township restaurant at gunpoint is under way.
Jury selection began this morning for Robert Anthony Stone, 22, who faces three counts of armed robbery and two counts of assault in the April 5 heist at the Red Robin, 3797 Carpenter Rd.

A man armed with a small, black handgun robbed an Ypsilanti Township convenience store Friday evening, police said.
The suspect, in his 20s, entered the Dairy Mart on Grove Road in Ypsilanti Township wearing a dark ski mask, baggy jeans and a multi-stitched leather jacket.
The suspect fled on foot. A canine search was unsuccessful, according to reports from the Washtenaw County Sheriff Department.

OAK PARK -- A 16-year-old boy accused of killing an Oak Park police officer appeared in court by video camera to hear the first-degree murder charge.
Jonathan Belton is being charged as an adult in Oakland County. His attorney entered a not-guilty plea on his behalf Friday in 45-B District Court in Oak Park.
Jackson lawyer stole almost $1 million from estate

A Jackson attorney has been jailed after admitting he looted a $1 million estate.
Court documents indicate Richard McQuillan wrote checks of up to $200,000 each to himself from the estate of Robert T. Howard.
Jackson County Probate Judge Diane Rappleye had ordered McQuillan to account for the missing money. McQuillan told the court Wednesday he stole more than $900,000 and juggled money among a number of clients in 2007.
Rappleye found McQuillan in contempt of court and sentenced him to an immediate 90-day jail term.
Howard's probate file indicates he died in 2006 at the age of 84.
McQuillan could face embezzlement charges with penalties of up to 20 years in prison.
Teen charged as adult in officer's death

Belton in court this past Monday.A resident of Howell, Samborski was fatally shot early Sunday in Oak Park, a Detroit suburb, following a traffic stop.
The 28-year-old was buried Wednesday. He leaves behind a wife and young child as well as other family members.
Oakland County Prosecutor Jessica Cooper said in a statement Thursday that she has authorized a warrant charging Jonathan Belton with first-degree murder.
A Friday arraignment was scheduled. A message seeking comment was left Thursday with defense lawyer Wright Blake.
Belton was charged Monday as a juvenile with open murder and possessing a firearm in the commission of a felony and is being held without bond.

U-M prof, law student fined in sex case

The University of Michigan professor and law student at the center of an alleged money-for-sex case received deferred sentences and were ordered to pay more than $1,000 in court fines and costs.
Yaron Eliav, 44, an associate professor in the Department of Near Eastern Studies, and the 22-year-old female U-M law student each had pleaded no contest to a misdemeanor charge of using a computer to commit a crime.

A case against an Ypsilanti Township man accused of shooting and killing a neighbor's cat will go to a pre-trial hearing in January on misdemeanor charges of property destruction and unlawful discharge of a firearm.
At a hearing Monday afternoon, Washtenaw County 14-B District Judge John B. Collins ruled the prosecution did not prove the charge of felony animal torture that was filed against Daniel Boa earlier this month. Instead, the judge ordered the case to remain in district court on the two misdemeanor charges.

About 50 University of Michigan students may be forced to find new housing when they return from the holiday break after their fraternity was severely damaged by broken water pipes over the weekend.
Ann Arbor Police say the Alpha Delta Phi fraternity house had also been buglarized but it was unclear if the incidents were linked.
