    by msrussel
    Tuesday January 06, 2009, 6:06 PM

ROCKFORD - It may not have been the prettiest game ever, but the Rams still gave themselves a nice New Years gift on Saturday.

Playing their first game in nearly three weeks, the Rockford girls basketball team dealt with some early jitters and a determined late effort from visiting Forest Hills Northern. But the Rams' solid second-quarter run proved to be enough to stave off the Huskies 45-39 in the non-conference tilt.

FRUITPORT - Like pioneers on the trail heading west, the Fruitport girl's basketball knows when it's time to circle the wagons.

With just nine players on the team, the Trojans have had to circle the wagons and stay together so far this season. Due to injuries and some unexpected player losses prior to the season, the Trojans have just nine players on this year's squad.

Rockford hangs on for nailbiter win over FHN

    by msrussel
    Tuesday January 06, 2009, 5:58 PM

ROCKFORD - Steve Majerle was speechless following Saturday night's game against Forest Hills Northern. After all, his Rams had just put him through quite the scare.

The longtime Rockford boys basketball mentor didn't quite know how to describe the wild last two minutes in which the Rams nearly lost an eight-point lead only to somehow cling to a 60-55 victory in the closing seconds. For the Huskies, who had trailed by 17 points during the third quarter, the ending was a matter of so close yet so far.

    Tuesday January 06, 2009, 5:55 PM

WYOMING -- For 24 minutes, Wyoming Park used its vice-grip-like trapping defense that created a 43-34 lead before the visiting Grandville Bulldogs rallied in heroic proportions by an unlikely performer in the final eight minutes to pull out a 60-57 non-conference victory Tuesday night.

Sophomore guard Jake Blauwkamp ignited a 9-0 run in the first three minutes of the fourth quarter, scoring a pair of layups and a deep right corner 3-pointer before Grandville senior forward Zach Johnson converted a rebounded layup to tie the game at 43.

    by msrussel
    Tuesday January 06, 2009, 5:50 PM

GRAND RAPIDS - At times in recent years, Zeeland East has been thought of in some circles as a one-man team. With each passing game this season, the Chix are proving that is not the case.

With all-state senior guard Korey Vandussen struggling at times against a lightning-quick East Kentwood defense last Monday evening, Zeeland East (6-0) got contributions from all over the court in a 78-54 win in the Cornerstone Holiday Tournament finals.

GRAND RAPIDS -- Last Tuesday's finals of the Aquinas College holiday basketball tournament resembled an NBA game. Two teams that seemed somewhat evenly matched hooked up, but only one - Catholic Central - had a star.

That standout player, Duke Mondy, poured in 30 points to propel the Cougars to a 61-48 win over Hudsonville. That outburst came just one day after Mondy was held to four points in a Cougar win over Cedar Springs.

    Wednesday December 24, 2008, 1:16 AM

WYOMING -- Like any varsity wrestling coach, Byron Center's Art Ward would prefer a lineup dotted with seniors and juniors. But given he only three senior starters on hand, Ward is pleased with where the Bulldogs' program is currently situated.

Byron Center (1-0, 9-3) could wrestle as many as five freshmen in varsity matches later this season, and that has Ward excited about the future.
